THE SOUTHERN TOMATO SANDWICH
(Give Away at Bottom of Post)
It's THAT time of year...the TOMATOES are Ripening
One local grower, Mr. Fowler, grows his tomatoes UNDERCOVER of a GREENHOUSE but the plants are actually planted
IN RED ALABAMA CLAY DIRT...NOT POTS!!!
I'm originally from West Virginia and I thought I LIKED Tomatoes
UNTIL
I moved SOUTH and ate an ALABAMA Grown Tomato
Oh My Goodness...I LOVE LOVE TOMATOES!!!
Now, to the real reason for this post....
TOMATO SANDWICHES!!
Purists, like myself, claim you only need THREE Ingredients:
HOMEGROWN TOMATO
(preferably straight from the garden!)
MAYONNAISE
(HELLMANS my preference, what's YOURS?)
WHITE BREAD
(Plain Ol Soft Flowers or SunbeamWhite Bread or
Pepperidge Farm Sour Dough Bread when I'm being fancy)
SALT
(Some use Salt AND Pepper, I'm a Salt only kinda gal)
What else, you ask??? Absolutely NOTHING
NO MEAT, NO LETTUCE, NO CHEESE, NO PICKLE, NO MUSTARD
I've tried branching out by adding one slice of Cheese...I prefer the original
It's all about the sweet & salty combo
Some love Pepper & Salt...How 'bout you??
How do you Roll when it comes to Tomato Sandwiches??
Have you eaten one??
If not, Do you plan to taste test this southern delicacy??
OK

I found these in a local antique store back in March and blogged about them. They are so beautiful if you like this sort of thing. I'll put the names in a hat and allow my Granddaughter to pick a name!
I do not like tomatoes- but one time Peggy Butler said it was because I had never had a good home-grown one-so she got the freshest bread, a beautiful tomato, mayonnaise and salt and pepper- I still could not like it. I know i'm a weirdo!

Hellmans all the way but only because I can't find Blue Plate any more! And yes, I love a tomato sandwich exactly like yours - no pepper, just salt. :) My husband would have to have meat on there and pepper too, but not me! blessings, marlene
ReplyDeleteOh Yes--Good ol' tomato sandwich with Wheat bread please(white sticks to the roof of my mouth) and Kraft Mayo, and I don't take the time to salt the tomato. Thank you very much. Also like the linens.
ReplyDeleteLOVE tomato sandwiches. Actually, that's about the only way I eat them! I have to have BLUE PLATE mayo and white bread with LOTS of SALT and a little pepper! Glad I found your blog Jane! Love it!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI like tomato sandwiches but my oldest (aged 6) LOVES THEM. Just the way you mentioned....except we use Mircle Whip (but call it mayo). She would eat them every day if we let her.
ReplyDeleteLove tomato sandwiches plain or toasted with bacon. Also love the tomatoes straight from garden but since I don't have garden this year I am trying to grow them hanging coming out of bottom of pot, growing down on my balcony . If any grow I will send picture. I noticed today that there is a couple of flowers on plant (hee hee) blessings
ReplyDeleteI'm a follower, and I LOVE those linens. I would love to give them a good home. I'll try a tomoato sandwich as soon as we get some good tomatoes.
ReplyDeletelove just butter bread and the tomatoes still warm from the garden! Never had a southern (unless you count those from Florida) sandwiches
ReplyDeleteLove your blog and love a good tomato sandwich. I'm a white bread, kraft mayo, and pepper kind of gal myself. Love the linens.
ReplyDeleteI am a follower now...and I have always had BLT's. I am going to have to ask my husband how he eats his. He's from Texas. They do many things differently. Like no beans in chili.
ReplyDeleteJust became a follower... just became a Grandmother also.
ReplyDeleteMostly I follow quilting blogs but the whole blog thing started for me when I Googled vintage pot holders and was directed to Bee in my Bonnet. And now I have found another lover of vintage linens. Oh happy day!
And yes I eat tomato sandwiches. Southern thing or just growing up with out a lot of money thing. I actually just think it is a good taste thing. HA
I love red and yellow tomato sandwiches with salt and lots of pepper, no matter the state. "Hot house" tomatoes (as my Dad called them) are not good. Vintage linens are wonderful. Thanks for the chance to win! Beth Freeburg
ReplyDelete'
I've become a follower too. LOve BLT's
ReplyDeleteahhh never had one never...and I love tomatoes..and your tomatoes are burgundy..wow...and of course I am follower, friend, pal, sweetie xxx
ReplyDeleteWow! That is how I eat my tomato sandwiches - though prefer whole wheat bread and my mother's tomatoes. Had a half of one at my sister's for lunch today (after a BLT). We usually have Helman's mayo, but she used Kraft. My mother is growing different varieties too - lots of hierlooms and varying sizes and shapes. I prefer red slicing tomatoes for my sandwich.
ReplyDeleteThere is nothing like a garden tomato! I remember my mom making tomato sandwiches when I was young.
ReplyDeleteTomato sandwiches are the best - just good bread, tomoato and a little mayo! thanks! love the vintage linens - love your blog - I am a new follower! finally - I have been lurking!
