INDOOR FLAG FLYING TODAY

WAVING MY FLAGS

My Patriotic Flag.
(The true colors are a much richer red, brighter royal blue)
There are 64, 3x4, rectangles sewn and folded into this star! I started this project at my Sassy Sewer Retreat in January not knowing what I was going to do with it.  I decided to add borders and make a flag for my front entrance.  I have yet to add the laminate to both sides.  I found the laminate at my local Hancock Fabrics.

A closer look at each fold.  The pattern is found at Moda
Fancy Folded Star.

#2

GET  DRESSED
This design is in part from a dress pattern given to us by Madame Samm
approximately 4 yrs ago.
I loved the dress patterns but never got around to using them until now.  Since I am remodeling my large dining room into my new sewing room, I like the idea of using this dress pattern as part of my room design... Oh yes, there will be MORE of these!

Rainy days don't make for great photos...sorry!
Check out the background fabric I found....Looks like the instructions inside a dress pattern.  Hmmm....I'm getting some new ideas even as I post these pictures...I can envision some painting on one of my walls using this idea???  Are you with me??  Any good sewing room ideas?
BRING 'EM ON!!

  1. Love your flags! I have wanted to make a folded star quite a long time now, hope to do it soon.
Your flag #2 should definitely become a wall hanging in your new sewing room.

  2. Love your flags! Here is an idea for your soon to be new studio http://www.vanishingdesignwall.com/ I have one and it really is great. Thank you for sharing. I also follow you via email.

  3. I've always wanted to make a folded star - very stunning. Oh, that is just too cool a background fabric. Definitely need to frame some vintage dress pattern envelopes to hang on the walls of your new room/look and an old taylor's maniquin.

    1. Better Late than never but here goes! I absolutley Loved your idea of framing vintage dress patterns for my sewing room and an old tailor's maniquin! I loved everyone's suggestions and most of them I've already thought of such as cutting board height, storage, design wall ideas, etc... But I had NOT thought of using vintage dress patterns. I love them and don't know why I hadn't thought of that!! So, with that said, please send me your email address, and full name so I can send you a Fat Quarter shop gift certificate of $30. Please forgive me for being so late but I completely forgot until today. it was like a lightbulb came on and I actually gasped out loud when it dawned on me I had never picked a winner. I've had some rather serious health scares of late so I'll use that as my excuse. I'm going to be Ok if I will lose some weight.
      Send me your info
I probably have your info but just to make sure, send it anyway.

  4. With the "Get Dressed" banner, does that mean you can't sew in your jammies? Yuk!! I love the banner. I was attending an informational luncheon for a program that our church may adopt for widows. In Oklahoma City, there is a group of widows that get dressed in their black dresses and go out to eat together four times a year - right before some of the events that will be difficult such as Christmas. The group that has the program my church may implement is hoping the OKC group will allow them to incorporate their "dress up" program into this program. I think it's a clever idea. Anyhow, I love the flag. I would love to make a folded star. Yours is beautiful. I'm glad to see you in the hop. I love to see your creations and inspiration. I have my sewing area very plain. My good friend found some cute sewing type wall decorations - like a spool, scissors, etc. and they are adorable on her sewing room wall. Of course, there are spool quilts, sewing machine quilts, etc. I want to put a large table cloth with the flannel side out for a design wall - I've never put one up. I'm turning my downstairs bedroom into my sewing room. Good luck in having a happy area to sew.

  5. I'm already a Follower. Love your Get Dressed flag. Those dresses are priceless. As for a tip in the new sewing room......there's nothing like as large as possible design board and ruler stands. Some use different types of dish racks.

  6. Love your flags, the colours and the folding are fabulous. The background sewing pattern fabric is sew cute! I'm following by email. Sewing room tip? I think the most important thing is to have your space set up in stations...cutting, sewing, ironing, in such a way that you feel the freedom to move about comfortably. I like to have my sewing accessories in arms reach, but sometimes I forget and allow my space to feel cluttered. For me it is a fine line. Good luck setting up...what fun for you! Fabulous flags!!

  7. Your flags are both so clever! It was a great idea to use the folded star for a patriotic flag.

  8. Good morning Jane! Your flags are wonderful. My fav is the "get dressed" one. It is so playful! Where in the world did you find the background fabric? It is a wow! Have fun with designing your new "play space" :) I have three years left until I retire from teaching. I am following you as well.

  9. Jane your flags are awesome. I love your flag with the dresses, such a wonderful idea to use the pattern for a flag.

  10. Great flags. Love the dresses especially. For your sewing room I would say two things: paint the walls a nice neutral color (I have a pale grey in mine) so they don't clash with the colorful quilting going on. The second thing is to hang a large piece of batting on one wall to use as your design wall. Mine is 54" wide and floor to ceiling, hung up with push pins. I love having it there because it is so useful. And I do follow you.

  11. Those are some great flags Jane. I've always liked the folded star. Make sure you have lots of shelf space! for placing containers of fabric, as that always tends to grow ;)

    ReplyDelete
  12. Superbe flags, you had quite a lot of work with them! I don't know which one is my fav, I love the colours and the star of the first and the idea of the second.... Well done!

  13. All I can say is WOW to that folded star. It's so beautiful! And I too love those adorable dresses. I'd like to frame that for my dsughter's room. Here's a picture of the IKEA storage I use in my sewing room (although this pic is not of my room...it's too dark here this morning to snap a pic). I know ikea is discontinuing expedit, but they're replacing it with something almost exactly like it. http://m.flickr.com/#/photos/lipstickbetty/6980201867/

  15. Love your flags Jane!! The background fabric for your dresses is lovely. Now a tip...make your cutting area high enough so your back doesn't ache. It makes such a difference!!

  21. Love them! I have been thinking about trying the folded mora star! Was it tough? I know it is a LOT of fabric and a lot of work! I have a tutorial saved! Thanks for hopping and sharing with us!

  22. All those little folds make a beautiful flag to say "a quilter lives here." Great idea. Those dresses will make your sewing room smile. I can picture them all over your sewing room. My sewing room has a trash can in every nook and cranny. It seems like I am always making trash. Thread catchers everywhere, too. You can never have enough. Beautiful flags, Jane!

  23. Love your flags. The dresses make me smile. Great ideas for your sewing room. A touch of yummy chocolate would not hurt. I "stash" mine in hidden places.

  24. The Folded Star looks fabulous and I love the background with your Get Dressed piece. The one thing that I wish I had in my sewing room is a place for a design wall. The floor just doesn't work the same way. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  25. I love the dressing form idea as a central theme of your sewing room. It could be used for all sorts of tiems (sewing machine cover, ironing board cover, cabinet labels, etc.). Other clothing items could be worked in also such as skirts, shirts, and of course shoes. svonfumetti at yahoo com

  26. The star is fabulous and I also love the background fabric for the dress forms. May I ask where you found that?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Loved the background fabric for your dress flag quilt. Who is the mfr? I think you should have a couple of pillows of the dresses with this background fabric to match your flag. You want you visitors to be comfy too, right? yessewingisfun@yahoo.com

  28. Both your flags are adorable.. You did a great job with your folded star in the center. That can be really tricky to do. Thank you for sharing.

  29. Your patriotic flag is beautiful and so is your dress flag! I'm sure the dresses will look lovely hanging in your sewing room.

  30. Great flags , the folded star is really neat . My very best tip for your new sewing room is to buy a cutting table the correct height , I have one that a local cabinet maker made for me and it was the best investment ever , sure saves my back ! I am a follower.

  31. Hi, ya. Love both of the flags. Will be interested in how the laminate works on the first flag with all those highs and lows; let us know. "Get Dressed" is wonderful. The background fabric is fabulous and the dresses are perfectly cute! Enjoy the whole process of renovation; what fun to have a blank slate to design as you want. Storage, storage, storage is my best tip; you can never have too much. Don't forget to be attentive to where you place your sewing machine. It's nice to have a wonderful view but you don't want the sun shining right on your machine.

  32. Jane those folded stars are fun and I really like the dress forms!

  33. Your patriotic flag is wonderful! I love the getting dressed one ... great fabrics!

My sewing room tips are ...

    1) a design wall is invaluable. There are all kinds of way to make one, temporary or permanent. There is a DIY tutorial here ... http://ellisonlane.com/2012/08/building-design-wall-tutorial.html ... This is the one I was going to add to my sewing room before I had to move back to my dining room corner for awhile.

    2) The other tip I have is to make everything "ergonomic" ... when I set up my sewing room I adjusted the heights of my cutting table and pressing station and sewing machine table to make them friendly for my back. More info on my blog here ... http://scrapatches.blogspot.com/2013/05/my-quilty-life-in-scrapatch.html

3} set up your workspace as you would for your kitchen ... make the layout of your workstations work for you ... like this ... http://www.merillat.com/plan-your-space/work-triangle-layout/kitchen-layout.html

    Hope this helps!

I have been a happy follower for some time. Looking forward to seeing pictures of your new sewing room ... :) Pat

  35. What a fabulous folded star! It will be a gorgeous flag to fly in your new sewing room. I like all white walls. It reflects light so you can see better, and you can add in any color by hanging the quilts you love. With the invention of those great Command Performance strips, it's easy as can be to change out quilts. I bought heavy duty magnetic quilt holders that hang with those command strips.

  36. Hi! Love the red and blue star. It looks very complex. I like your dress form flag, too. I wonder if you have thought about using a miniature dress form as a pin cushion for your sewing room? I like different pincushions for different types of sharps. I have one that is for really long glass head pins; one that is not very deep so my hand needles don't get lost; one that has "throw away" pins, used machine needles, and stray safety pins; one that has "T" pins for blocking my knitting. I guess my suggestion is collect pincushions and give them designated jobs. I am a GFC follower but I think I might have seen you on Blogloving? That is one I check almost every day. You may know me as Purl Buttons, Sewbeads, or Michelle Harrison

  37. What pretty flags..love the folded star!!! My tip for setting up your new sewing room: think about what will be best for your 'body' while you are creating…good lighting for your 'eyes' (I've used Ott-lites for years…you get both excellent light and true colors for matching fabrics); a comfortable chair along with a comfortable height for both your sewing table and cutting surface for your 'back'; and using a die cut machine for cutting large amounts of the same shape to save the stress on your 'hands', 'wrists' and 'shoulders'.

  38. Hi Jane, Love the flags especially the dress one. I am envious of your new sewing room and am looking forward to when I can have one of my own. I think if I wanted one thing for my sewing room it would be a TV/DVD player as I love to watch films whilst I sew. It is quiet where we live and if no-one else is in the house it can be quite spooky, so Treacle and I watch films whilst I am busy sewing. Susie x

  39. Fabulous!
I don't have a sewing room but a corner of a spare bedroom! If I had enough room I'd definitely put a design wall at the top of my wishlist!

  40. Jane I particularly love your patriotic flag - it will be perfect the whole summer! And your dress one will be great in your new sewing room. In my sewing room I bought shoe cubbies and stacked them (I used 5 of them, 2 on each side and one on the end) and Jerry cut a piece of plywood for the top. I put my big cutting mat on top of that and trimmed it to size. It's the perfect height for cutting and I have all that storage in the cubbies underneath. I keep books there and baskets of precuts and plastic bins with rick rack, bias, and ribbon. Beside this cutting table, on the wall, we put pegboard where I hang all my rulers and rotary cutters and scissors. I can't tell you how much I love this! blessings, marlene

  41. Oh I'm in love with the red, white, and blue flag. Patriotic is my thing! The dresses are sew darn cut though. I had a friend use a faux technique with tissue paper on her bathroom wall. It was really neat. And then I got to thinking, how neat that would be to use old tissue sewing patterns and do the same technique on a wall in my studio. I can find out the particulars for you if you want me to.

  42. The details in your patriotic flag are amazing. This is America the Beautiful! How fun to design your sewing room and use the theme dress patterns and sewing. I have no clever ideas for you except to keep bobbins with thread spools using golf tees I did a post on them. Thank you sew very much for Hopping and Flag Flying...

  43. Both of your creations are beautiful. For a convenient ironing/pressing station right next to my sewing machine, I lower the height of my ironing board so all I have to do is swivel my chair and iron/press seams as I'm sewing. Very convenient.

  44. Those dresses are just sew cute. And, the star is amazing. Whew, lots of folding.

  45. Your folded star is so cool!! I should try one for a pillow cover. As for tips for a sewing room (based on what I wish I had!!)
    Separate sewing and cutting table
    Storage space for fabric
    Good lighting
    Design wall
    Entertainment (music, TV, etc)

  46. Your flags look great! I love the look of the folded star. I perhaps could use the Get Dressed flag on my wall since I work from home and have been known to stay in my pj's until noon. Here is a link to my newest sewing room idea which I plan to set up this month. http://www.pinterest.com/pin/198228821072633222/
See the tomato cage on the floor? I plan to use one to hang my patterns using binder clips on the rings. I like the way the top prongs are tied together and curled over. Those cages come in red now and I love red!

  47. I absolutely love your get-dressed flag! It's so pretty and whimsical. And the folded star is awesome. My tip for your sewing room is to decorate it to the hilt with all the colors and the things that bring you joy.(What does your inner child want?) Include a gallery wall with your small wallhangings, hang a prism for rainbows, paint it any color you want, and get a wallpaper border that you love. Sew curtains out of delightful fabric. Cover a huge piece of foam core board with a flannel sheet to make a design wall. Paint a big old picture frame and put cork board in it for a place to post inspirational photos and swapped postcards. Have open shelves to display your pretties and add a tv or music.

  48. Hi sweetie love your folded star and the colors are beautiful, is it hard they always look so complicated. The other one is adorable and will look cute on the sewing room wall.
One thing I would like in a sewing room is two comfortable so you can always have room for a friend to sew with you. Every body gave you such good suggestions that I don't need to repeat. Suffering from Sciatic and had some acupuncture done today. No sewing for me right now. Blessings Sandra

  51. How patriotic this flag is. Would be a wonderful birthday gift idea for my sister who was born on the Fourth of July. We always called her "firecracker" and she would get so mad . . . Pleasure for us.

For your sewing room, I urge you to have plenty of space for cutting out fabric at at least counter height to save your back. It goes without saying that you need lots and lots of space to store your fabrics. Bookshelves on an outside wall are perfect -- you can see what you have and you can tell DH or family and friends that the more fabric you buy, the better the insulation!

  52. Lovely flags!! You should make a machine cover to match the second flag :)

  55. Fabulous red, white, and blue star! I find the idea of stars very intimidating. The dress pattern flag is wonderful, sassy, and fun-perfect for the sewing/craft room. The background fabric is perfect and the dresses are brilliant.
An idea for your sewing room, hmmmm. I've admired the pincushion/thread catchers people have made to have next to their sewing machine. I use a small paper lunch bag and masking tape and think the pincushion would be tidy and attractive.

  61. I love your flags! I'm sorry, I've been trying to post since Monday. My laptop won't let me post to the blogs for some unknown reason.
I hope your sewing room has lots of wall space. I wish I had invested in some built in cabinets when I moved in this room. Instead, my husband bought me some big furniture, and my space is so limited.

Found you blog by searching for Gmama Jane. Thanks for signing your comment. Any way, I just love those dresses. I have a BOM from last year with something similar. I must get it out. Thanks for the inspiration. I am joining in with Let's Book It over at Vroomen's Quilts. Lucky Sharon winning the voucher.
