Fall Sewing and I'm Guest Blogger at Sew We Quilt

Do you do Fall Cleaning?  How about Fall Sewing?
FYI:  I will be Guest Blogging on Thursday
at
I'm sharing a fun little quilt block that's all the rage in The Netherlands...Klosjes!  Klosjes is the Dutch word for "Little Spools"
Modern Fabrics for a Traditional Dutch Quilt Block

May I welcome my visitors from Sew We Quilt!
I feel honored to be Guest Blogger considering I'm not a Designer...nope...no special fabric line...na dah...100's of followers?...nah, just small town here...etsy store owner?..zip zilch...I give all my stuff away.
So why me??  Don't really have a clue, other than Madame Samm likes to involve EVERY type of quilter in this Wonderful World of Quilting.  Her heart really is in the right place, y'all.  Y'all is an official southern word that just rolls off my tongue...can't help it...it feels as natural as having a needle and thread in my hand or getting giddy over the newest fabric over at Jane's Fabrics
Klosjes and Tablerunners are on my Design Wall for September

This little beauty is winging it's way to a special friend who Stitches by the Lake ...Hmm???...Who could that be???

I made this Table-runner in a class I took back in March
at
Mountain Quiltfest, Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.
We used fusible batting in a quilt as you go technique.
However, both me and the instructor agreed my table-runner looked great "just as"
So, I left it just like you see it above, no quilting.
I have the Freedom to make those decisions and that's why I love the creative process involved in quilting!

Now, for some Klosjes!
3 in. Block Klosjes
Did You Know?...Little Spools is the oldest design in Traditional Dutch Quilt Patterns
I took a modern slant on fabric choice with these klosjes.  Primitive Fabric is more often chosen in the Netherlands.
I suggest doing a Google search and look at all the fun quilts made from this wonderful little quilt block.  I tried different phrases but was most successful with the following:
*spool quilts in the Netherlands*
or
*little spools or klosjes in the Netherlands*

Here I am..fat arms and all, working on some Klosjes or Little Spools in a Red White and Black combination.
Guess What?  I'm Giving Away 50 of these little Beauties to my fabulous followers!
Starting Thursday, everyone who Comments and Follows on my blog will be placed in the Prize Pull.
Plus, my 100th Follower gets an extra surprise!!  Who will it be?

Look at this luscious Halloween fabric...yummy and fun!  Have I told you how I love Halloween..hold over from my childhood when Halloween was kitschy and harmless trick or treating fun in the safe neighborhood and small WV town I grew up in.
I'll be turning this into a Tablerunner...not sure what pattern..may use the one in the picture above.
What do you think?
My #1daughter has already laid claim to this fabric for a Table runner.
So I guess #2 (LaLA) will get Tablerunner #2!
Now DIL will have to have one??
AAH, her's fabric for sweet DIL and Tablerunner #3
Now, I want to make some Klosjes in Fall/Halloween fabric..
So...will you join me??
I'll send you Full instructions for the Klosjes.  All you have to do is request it in your comment and make sure I have your email address.  No Reply Bloggers can go to Sew We Quilt to get instructions cause I don't have a clue!

I'm a VISUAL Learner...so my tutorials lean in that direction.  Give me a picture and turn me loose.  However, for those of you who need more detailed instructions, the written tutorial with templates and measurements can be emailed to you in just a Clickaroo!   Just say so in your comment, OK??

Here is a BRIEF VISUAL TUTORIAL
It's best to contrast dark fabrics with light fabrics so the spools stand out!

Hello Gran'mama - Your Klosje giveaway would be grand for me - I'm about to become a grandma for the first time (mid-Nov) and my husband's Dutch, so the grandbaby will be part Dutch so Klosjes in red and black and white would be perfect! - so I hope I'm the one who wins! Am following you now too - sent over from Madame Samm

  19. You did great on your post at sew we quilt. I am a new follower and fellow grandmother. Since the seams on the spool blocks is set in, does that mean the best way to make them is always by hand instead of machine? All of my piecing is machine done except for the yo-yos I am currently making.

  59. I am very happy that I checked out Madame Sam this morning and found you. I love your writings and humor. I almost forgot to enter because I got so busy reading through your blog. Gramama, you are my sewl (soul) sister maybe, we do have somewhat similar styles of writing and saying things. "Klosjes", I am loving that word. I have the perfect fabrics for a "Halloween" and a "Fall" ""Klosjes"" and will happily join in but only if I have time. Very busy right now making sure my sis is comfortable every hour she has left with us (she is my first priority at this time). She was moved to a Hospice House yesterday to rest in comfort and love until God takes her hand. I would love to have your pattern for the Klosjes and will get some fabric cut and try my hand at hand stitching again. My favorite colors are Black, White and Red. Thank you for the chance to win and God Bless.

  64. I am so excited! Love the idea of using the small format and am thrilled with the history behind the block. The history of this wonderful art is what has drawn me into the quilting world. Just got some handpieced Hummingbirds that were made by my Great Grandma, but they will wait to be put together until my skills get a little more refined. This is just the most wonderful pattern that I would love to try now. I would be grateful if you could send me the more detailed pattern. Just in case my email doesn't work, my email is pumpkinhollowprimitives (at) hotmail.com. Would love a chance for your klosjes! Thanks so much for the wonderful tutorial, and I am so happy to be following your blog and will be browsing through your posts today!!

  130. Ok you got me. I'm a new follower after reading your post over at Sew WE Quilt. :) I have to tell you that the table runner you have done is THE table runner pattern I've been looking for to make Christmas gifts for our friends and relatives. I see you took a class but can you tell me where I might find that pattern? I love that table runner design and think it would be wonderful with holiday fabrics.

I'd also love to have the full tutorial on your spool blocks. I'm very new to quilting and while I am a visual/must do once myself type learner, I am also one that needs to read instructions while looking at the pictures since that's how it helps me most.

How nice of you to be giving away those blocks. Wow. That's a lot of work you're giving away. How awesone of you. I'll cross my fingers.

Thanks for such a great post here and at Sew WE Quilt.

  136. I came over from Stash Manicure and LOVE your tute for the spools. Your pictures of all the spool quilts and the bit of history are fascinating! I haven't tried hand piecing yet, but can certainly see the advantages when dealing with the dreaded Y seams, LOL. I'm a new follower.

  137. You are like me in that you like the story behind the quilt. To me it is what makes it all that more special. And like me you love Halloween prints. I am totally addicted and my favorite local shop calls me when the new ones arrive so that I don't miss out. I just need to make time to actually make some things from all that I have collected.

  193. I just love your post and tutorial. I am a relatively new quilter, and I would just love to try making the Klosjes quilt. 194. Just finally got internet - briefly and very slowly but at least I got a bit! The table runner is just gorgeous and I am way behind since yours isn't near ready. But it's in the process...at least that's a step nearer meaning maybe you'll get it soon after I get home. Love the spools - I'm so far behind on other projects right now that I probably won't get to try them soon but I'll put them on my to-do list. :) blessings, marlene
