FARMHOUSE KITCHEN
MAKEOVER
Finally, I'm getting around to posting some remodel pictures
Look at the Before pictures, circa 1987-2012 and you can see how much the farmhouse needed an update.
We did a lot on our own but we had a contractor to lay the bamboo wood floor and a cabinet maker to make the country cottage cabinets. I originally thought I would simply redo the old cabinets but for not a whole lot more, I got custom made cabinets that I REALLY love.

BEFORE
Look at that hideous wall paper back splash! That was layer #2.
My budget wouldn't let me have all new appliances but I did get a new dishwasher. I'm saving for a new stove as we speak. I do everything on a cash only basis...NO CREDIT...for ANYTHING!!
If I want something, I have to save for it and once I got used to the concept, I really like living
Debt Free!
AFTER
My kitchen curtain over the sink will be from the same fabric on the chairs.
Are you ready for more pictures? You can stop reading now or keep going for more remodel details and some frugal tips.
The island drawers are large and deep! I thought I wanted shelving with pull out shelves on rollers...my cabinet maker convinced me to go with drawers. I am THRILLED with the drawers!
This hold ALL my baking dishes, bowls, utensils and even the Flour!
Countertops are Formica w/ granite look...very affordable and I think they look great.
My 25 yr, old formica tops held up exceptionally well. I couldn't afford those pricey counter tops so I had to compromise.
This is my Rescued Sink! Found it at the Habitat for Humanity Restore
for $50 bucks. I WANTED a FARMHOUSE SINK, BUT>>>if you don't have granite or stone type counter tops a farmhouse sink will leak due to the front overhang. Don't ask me why, my eyes glazed over as my contractor was explaining to me why I COULD NOT have a Farmhouse Sink. I was pouting until I found this little beauty taken out of an historical home here in Alabama. I needed alabaster colored porcelain as my Plan B but hubby was telling me I wouldn't find it so just go ahead and take the white one we found or better yet, go cheaper and get the stainless steel.
That's when I found HER...Double sink...Alabaster...Porcelain...minute chip here in 2 places (I'm talking teeny tiny) and all for 50 bucks!! High Five!!
Let's Keep going...
Bar Stools came out of a real bar, brown, yucky colored upholstery,...

Everything just looks lovely! I am a 'cash & carry' person too.
ReplyDeleteLooks wonderful! I love your cabinets! And the countertop and sink are perfect! I don't know why people think they "need" granite.
ReplyDeleteJust beautiful!! Now you could arrive at my place anytime...I need a re do.......lol
ReplyDeleteI feel already at home....lovely changes...very farm looking in an exquisite way...and your sink...I grew up with one of those....lucky find Jane....you will enjoy it forever
ReplyDeleteThat is gorgeous! I'm an interior designer and you did good!
ReplyDeleteYou have done a fabulous job! It looks so beautiful and welcoming.
ReplyDeleteWell, well, well... what a timely post. I am starting the same thing. And I have picked all drawers for my base cabinets too. I am just too darn old to crawl on my hands and knees looking for things. I went to IKEA and got everything. My remodel guy backed out this past weekend, so I am waiting for another one to give me an estimate today. Good info on electrical, etc! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteBTW you new kitchen looks fabulous!
You certainly made a silk purse out of a sow's ear! It's a delightful space and all the little extras are wonderful. I'm hoping for the drawers for my pots and pans as well. Good thing we're DIYers, it's part of the fun. Enjoy your new space!
ReplyDeleteYour kitchen is beautiful!
ReplyDeletePerfect! I am getting ready to redo my kitchen this year and yours is such an inspiration. Love how you used the Formica. I've had mine for 20 years and they have held up well so I think I will go with them again, besides I really don't want to have to condition granite every few months. As for the backsplash, I've remodeled several houses and putting tile up isn't that hard, you can do it.
ReplyDeleteWhat a delightful remodel. So nice and bright. Your special touches really stand out. What time is coffee?
ReplyDeleteIt looks fabulous. I love the big drawer cabinets.
ReplyDeleteJust super gorgeous Jane, i love the kitchen cupboards and the big drawers are to die for. You and Hubby did a wonderful job!! It would make want to cook again.
ReplyDeleteIt all looks wonderful. It is a kitchen I would be very happy in. I need to go and check out Hobby Lobby. I need some cool art for my new house. Congrats!
ReplyDeleteIt's so beautiful Jane - and I'm so jealous. :) My kitchen is small and the design is not nearly as good as yours. It definitely needs an update but other things keep being more critical than that just when I think I have the money. Oh well, I have a kitchen and that's more than lots of others have so I'm thankful. But still jealous! blessings, marlene
ReplyDeleteI'm extremely impressed with your writing skills as well as with the layout on your blog. Is this a paid theme or did you modify it yourself? Anyway keep up the excellent quality writing, it is rare to see a great blog like this one nowadays.

Wow, what a transformation! I love your new kitchen! Great buy on that sink, I just love the Restore! I say do the tiling yourself. It really isn't to hard. My husband and I just tiled the backsplash on our bar. We used a natural stone that comes attached to that netting backing. Can't think off hand what that's actually called but makes laying the tile easier. We used a pre-mixed thin set mortar from Lowes. So no mixing.
ReplyDeleteYour kitchen looks fabulous! Love the sink and the chairs and the drawers and ... well, everything!
ReplyDeleteWow! What a make over! Looks great I very happy for you.
