Believe it or not and especially after seeing the above pictures, I'm not much of a social butterfly since I retired. I choose my activities with care and don't burden my schedule with a lot of unnecessary activities. I'm going to admit something here. People have disappointed me in the past. As I've grown older, I've become less trusting of people so I choose wisely as to who I spend my time with. #1 husband accuses me of turning into a hermit....I tell him I like his company and my solitude. It may sound harsh but I've chosen to spend my precious time with those whom I love and trust the most...MY FAMILY.
I've worked since I was 14 yrs old in some capacity. In High School, I was working two summer jobs while everyone else was laying by the pool. I ran the concession stand AT the pool! I even worked my way through college on a work-study program. Once I graduated, I went straight into the professional field of Speech Therapy and later the field of Special Education. I was a Working Mother the entire time I was studying to get my Master's degree as an Education Specialist. An 18 month hiatus to have my first 2 children was the only break I had up to that point. I continued to work for 30 yrs. so when I retired in Dec. 2008 I made a staunch decision to be a

No more late faculty meetings, after school workshops, grading papers, shuttling children to various activities/friend's houses...NOPE...I had FINALLY reached MY TIME in LIFE.
I love this old FARMHOUSE, this small farm complete with horses, dogs, and goats at various times. I Love my Husband, my Children, My Grandchildren, My Sisters/Nieces/Nephews and Cousins.
But Mainly it's just ME and #1 Husband

In the Bible, the Apostle Paul admonishes us to be content in whatever circumstance we find ourselves.
I Am Content
Good for you. This is how I feel (minus the husband) - very garded on travel and friends and outings. I did join our local quilt guild, but it is small and a close group of people-most of whom come here for quilting classes, too.
ReplyDeleteYou are absolutely right! Enjoy your time and do only what you really want to do. Have fun.
ReplyDeleteI also love to be content. Sounds to me that you deserve to be content, and surrounding yourself with people you love is so wonderful. Enjoy your special time with hubby, family, and of course your quilting!
ReplyDeleteJane, I continually find more and more ways that we are alike. I have in long time past learned not to be as trusting as I once was. I also have become somewhat of a hermit since I no longer work. I like to stay at home with hubby and the puppies. I do love to spend time with my Bama Belles, but no longer put myself out to be hurt as before. Beautiful picture, BTW. Hugs!
ReplyDeleteYou are right! When I retired, basically the same thing happened and I LOVE it! Be content, be yourself, and love life! ~Jeanne
ReplyDeleteJane that is amazing. I can't believe you had all those women creating together. Wonderful.
ReplyDeleteI believe finding your own time and space is important regardless of our age or stage. Sometimes we learn the 'hard' lessons younger than we should and it does change us. Being with our loved ones is so important.

Hi,
ReplyDeleteI like to search out quilt blogs that are new to me. Discovered yours a while ago, and stopped in tonight to read some posts. When I came across this thoughtful post, I wanted to share that I feel quite the same. I was a HS English teacher, then a school district librarian, and I retired almost two years ago. We live in a very small community in Wisconsin (Amish country) and sometimes I feel there aren't many opportunities for new friends or pastimes, but most often I feel content like you. I garden, read, sew, quilt small projects, machine embroider, and enjoy time with husband. We have 6 grandchildren, 3 get off the bus here each day. They get picked up a couple hours later. I also write a blog where I review books; most of them are Christian fiction or inspirational nonfiction. Check it out at www.thoughtsfrommillstreet.com Keep enjoying life.
